The second Hokie Stormchase crew is heading out for parts west on Monday, Memorial Day. At the moment it appears that we’ll be targeting southwestern Oklahoma for a late day chase on Tuesday, necessitating a long drive Monday to position ourselves close enough to make it on time. Wednesday’s target looks to be close to that vicinity, possibly somewhere along – or south of – the Texas / Oklahoma border.
After that we’ll likely head north to catch the next trough as it swings across the central and northern Plains. This pattern seems to be more promising than the one we gave up on last weekend and we’re hoping to provide the students with several days of jaw-dropping Plains storms. It’s a great way for them to learn the basics of severe storm prediction and then immediately see the fruits of their labor…a far cry from their typical classroom experience.
