UPDATE 6:00 pm:  I finally saw someone use the “D” word for this oncoming convective juggernaut:  Derecho.  The models have it reaching the Roanoke Valley between 9 and 10 p.m. this evening.  Batten down the hatches!

The Storm Prediction Center has much of the Old Dominion in a risk for severe weather the next several days.  A portion of it can be attributed to the extremely high temperatures under which any small triggering mechanism can provide explosive storm growth.  The Virginia Storm Chasing FB page mentioned this earlier today along with a note that this morning’s low of 84 degrees (F) in Roanoke might be an all time record high LOW temperature.  Whatever happens the next few days be careful of the heat and keep an eye on the sky!
